Remedy wins at 2005 Key West Race Week: | |||
|
Our class, PHRF 5, consisted of six Evelyn 32s, three Olson 30s, an Olson 29, a Beneteau First 10m, and a Nelson Marek 30. This was the first time we went head to head with another E 32; and if that wasn't challenging enough - the other boats in our class sure were. Conditions couldn't have been better. The first four races were windy enough for us to stay within the range of our #3 jib and new #4 (the #4 proved to be the game winner for us in 25 knots). Needless to say the jib trimmers were quite happy to use the smaller sails! As the week went on, we used the light #1 in one race and ended up using the heavy #1 the rest of the time. Sure beats sailing in Fisher's Island Sound! This event was not only a great week of racing but also a time where we could come together and work as a team. Our crew for the event was quite diverse including loft managers from all over the world. Specifically, Doug Christie from our Seattle, Washington loft, Geoff Bishop from our Perth, Australia loft, John Fries from Mystic, Connecticut, and Tony Strout from Cape Town, South Africa. We were also lucky enough to have Richard Archer, Paul Andrepont, Charles Estabrooks and Jim Pinno. Coming together to compete at Key West was a great experience and demonstrated the importance of good teamwork. At the end of the week we learned we had taken six first place wins as well as one second place. With our score at eight points we won PHRF 5 with an 11-point cushion. Our success was based on several factors: excellent crew work and blazing boat speed. We have been testing sail shapes and rig setups on Remedy for three years now. The countless hours spent were well worth it!
